Is delayed speech always a cause for concern?

Parenting Perspective

Not always. Speech development is highly individual and often influenced by factors such as temperament, home language environment, and exposure to verbal interaction. Some children prefer to observe quietly before they begin speaking confidently, and this can be completely normal. A slow start in speech does not automatically indicate a developmental concern.
However, certain signs do call for closer attention. If a child shows little to no response to sounds, struggles to follow simple directions, or has not started using single words by age two, a speech and language therapist may provide helpful guidance. Meanwhile, parents can foster a language-rich environment by describing actions out loud, naming objects during play, singing rhymes, reading books with repetition, and pausing to allow the child to respond. Consistency and patience are more important than drills or pressure. Every word builds a bridge between parent and child, and those bridges take time.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rahman (55), Verses 3 to 4: ‘Created mankind and taught him the art of expression.’ These verses affirm that the ability to communicate is a divine gift, one granted at different times and in different ways. Expression is not merely a milestone to be measured; it is a sacred capacity given for a greater purpose. It carries with it beauty, responsibility, and unique timing.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2627, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand people are safe.’ This Hadith draws our attention away from when speech begins to how it is used. In Islamic tradition, words are tools of kindness, dignity, and guidance. Delayed speech, therefore, is not a sign of failure but an invitation for gentler nurturing. Parents who approach this stage with compassion echo holy Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ own way of encouraging growth without haste or anxiety.
Trusting in Allah Almighty’s plan and continuing to provide warm, meaningful interaction ensures that, when the words come, they are more than sound. They carry wisdom, warmth, and grace.
