How much water should my teen drink daily?

Parenting Perspective

Teenagers should have 6 to 8 glasses (1.5 to 2 litres) of water every day, with more in hot weather or during exercise. Water aids digestion, temperature control, and brain function. Dehydration results in tiredness, headaches, mood swings, and concentration issues. Ask your teenager to use a refillable bottle and drink continuously during the day. Do not substitute water with sugary or caffeinated beverages. Pure water is one of the greatest favours, and teaching people to be grateful and disciplined in this matter speaks for both physical and spiritual health.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anbiyaa (21), Verse 30: ‘And We (Allah Almighty) designed (the emergence of) all forms of life from water; so why do they still not believe (in the infinite truth)?’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 425, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Do not waste water, even if you perform ablution on the bank of a flowing river.’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3684, that it was narrated that Sad bin Ubadah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what charity is best?’ He said: ‘Giving water to drink.’ Water is not just a physical necessity, but a spiritual trust from Allah Almighty. Teaching teens its value and role in health encourages balance, Shukr (gratitude), and a deeper understanding of Islamic stewardship over the body.
