How much protein does my toddler need?

Parenting Perspective

A 1–3-year-old toddler needs about 13 grams of protein daily. Protein aids in muscle growth, tissue repair, immune function, and overall growth. A small portion of Halal meat, fish, lentils, eggs, yoghurt, or beans will suffice. No need to overfeed the protein, as this might put pressure on the kidneys. Parents need to emphasise balance, coupling protein with fruits, vegetables, cereals, and healthy fats. Providing different protein sources throughout meals allows children to prefer healthier foods. Plant protein sources are also healthy, especially for households with little consumption of meat. Parents should give less processed, high-sodium or preservative-rich meats and instead give fresh, healthy versions. Keeping meals fun, using portions appropriate for age, encourages toddlers to eat and enjoy the food, and thereby gain enough nutrients.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mu’minoon (23), Verse 21: ‘And indeed, in the (existence of) the cattle there is an empirical comprehension for you; We (Allah Almighty) quench your thirst from that (milk) which is produced from their bodies; and for you there are extraordinary amount of nutritional benefits therein…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1833, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘If you buy some meat or cook something in a pot, then increase its broth, and serve some of it to your neighbour.’ These references confirm the value of wholesome, lawful animal-based foods, provided in moderation, as a source of nourishment and benefit.
