How much fibre should a child aged 4-8 years eat?

Parenting Perspective

Children between the ages of 4- and 8-years need about 25 grams of dietary fibre per day to maintain digestive health and overall wellness. Fibre regulates bowel movements, avoids constipation, and feeds good gut bacteria, which keeps the digestive system healthy. It also assists in keeping blood sugar levels stable and gives a sense of fullness that can control hunger and prevent excessive eating. To do this, parents must incorporate a variety of fibre-rich foods like whole grains (Brown rice, oats, wholemeal bread), fruits (Apples, pears, berries), vegetables (Carrots, peas, broccoli), legumes (Lentils, beans), nuts, and seeds. Fibre must be introduced slowly in addition to sufficient water to avoid discomfort like bloating or gas. Getting children to eat colourful, diverse plant foods encourages natural intake of necessary fibre alongside required vitamins and minerals. Educating children about the advantages of high-fibre foods and making food preparation a participation activity can promote acceptance and enjoyment of health eating.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al An’aam (6), Verse 141: ‘…Eat of its harvest when it bears fruit…’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2970, that: ‘Never did holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ eat to his fill the bread of wheat for three successive days until he had run the course of his life.’ These Islamic references encourage the consumption of wholesome, beneficial foods in moderation, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet that includes natural fibre for maintaining good health.
