How much caffeine is too much for teens?

Parenting Perspective

Teenage consumption of caffeine should be strictly restricted because of its interaction with growing bodies. Doctors advise that adolescents drink not more than 100 mg of caffeine a day, about the amount present in one cup of coffee. Excessive consumption leads to anxiety, sleep interference, heart rate elevation, gastrointestinal disturbances, and inadequate concentration. Caffeinated beverages like sodas, energy drinks, and some teas can accumulate soon. Adolescents are especially sensitive to caffeine because of reduced body weight and hormonal fluctuations. The emphasis should be placed on creating habits that favour intrinsic energy: proper sleep, healthy meals, and consistent physical activity.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 31: ‘…And eat and drink and do not be extravagant (wasteful), as indeed, He (Allah Almighty) does not like extravagance.’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith, 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2664, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah Almighty than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter)’ Islam promotes moderation and health preservation. Excessive caffeine disrupts natural balance and dependence on such stimulants contradicts the principle of using the body responsibly. Teaching teens to limit intake reflects a commitment to both physical wellness and spiritual discipline as guided by the noble Quran and Sunnah.
