How does physical affection, like hugs or a gentle touch, help build emotional connection?

Parenting Perspective

One of the earliest and most powerful ways that people connect is through touch. Comfort and connection can be expressed by giving them a hug, a pat on the back, or removing their hair from their eyes. The neurological system is regulated, and your child feels emotionally ‘held’ when they get physical affection. It fosters love, reduces fear, and strengthens trust when applied regularly and with deference. Even older kids gain from it; even though they might not request it, they still require it.

Spiritual Insight

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embraced children and showed physical tenderness. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1924, ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr narrated that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, ‘The merciful are shown mercy by Al Rahman. Be merciful on the Earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens.’ Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Fath (48), Verse 29: ‘(Prophet) Muhammad ﷺ is the last and final Messenger of Allah (Almighty); and those that are his Companions,: are uncompromising (in their values) with the extremists in disbelief and are merciful (in their dealings) with each other…’ Mercy shown through touch creates a legacy of love that lives in the body and soul.
