How do we encourage children to use social media as a tool for sharing beneficial Islamic reminders, rather than purely for entertainment?

Parenting Perspective

Social media can be more than just a place for entertainment; it can be a powerful tool for spreading goodness. By guiding our children, we can help them see their online presence as an opportunity for positive impact.

Highlight the Positive Power of Social Media

Talk to your child about how social media can be used as a force for good. Show them examples of inspiring Islamic content creators who use their platforms to share beneficial knowledge. This helps them to see the potential beyond just entertainment

Involve Them in Content Creation

Encourage them to create their own simple reminders to share. This could be a beautiful graphic with a short hadith, or a video of them reciting a verse of the Quran. Let them choose topics they are passionate about so the process feels authentic and enjoyable.

Set Balanced Usage Goals

The goal is not to ban entertainment, but to encourage a healthy balance. You could suggest a simple goal: for every few posts for fun, they could share one post that is beneficial. This helps them to integrate their faith into their online life naturally.

Lead by Example

If you occasionally share a beneficial reminder on your own social media, your child will see it as a normal and valuable habit. Your example is the most powerful endorsement and shows that this is a shared family value.

This approach nurtures a sense of purpose in their digital interactions.

Spiritual Insight

Calling others to goodness (da’wah) with wisdom and kindness is one of the noblest acts in Islam. In the modern age, social media has become a powerful new avenue for this.

The Manner of Invitation

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 125:

‘Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best…’

This verse encourages us to be wise, gentle, and respectful when sharing Islamic reminders, a principle that applies perfectly to digital spaces.

The Reward for Guiding Others

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1893, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to that of those who follow it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.’

By using social media to share beneficial Islamic content, children can earn immense and ongoing rewards while positively influencing others.
