How do we create rules that cover not just time but also types of digital content?

Define Both Time and Content Boundaries 

When you create your family agreement, be sure to address both duration and content. You might allow one hour of screen time, but specify that this should be used for educational apps, creative games, or family-approved shows, while excluding certain other types of content. This teaches that the quality of screen time matters. 

Use Clear, Positive Language 

Instead of only focusing on what is forbidden, frame the rules in a positive way. A statement like, ‘In our family, we choose apps that help us learn or create,’ is more motivating than ‘You are not allowed to play mindless games.’ A visible ‘Family Digital Code’ can help to keep these values clear for everyone. 

Model and Review Together 

Children will adopt these values more readily when they see you living by them too. If you avoid certain types of content, you can mention why. It is also helpful to review the rules together every few months to ensure they are still appropriate for your child’s age and maturity. 

By focusing on both time and content, you help your child become a discerning and mindful digital citizen. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islam teaches us to be selective and mindful, prioritising what benefits our hearts and minds, and avoiding that which is merely a distraction or a source of harm to our character. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Muminun (23), Verses 1–3: 

‘Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive, And they who turn away from ill speech…’ 

This reminds us that a key quality of a successful believer is to choose activities, whether digital or otherwise, that add value, and to turn away from that which is idle or harmful. 

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3976, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Part of the perfection of a person’s Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.’ 

This principle encourages us to be intentional with our time and attention, focusing on what is truly beneficial for our worldly life and our Hereafter. 

By creating rules for both time and content, you teach children to use their digital space wisely, protecting their faith and character in a balanced way.
