How do I support my child through a growth spurt nutritionally?

Parenting Perspective

Nutritional support of a child during a growth spurt includes offering a balanced and nutrient-rich diet to cover their higher energy and nutrient requirements. Growth spurts necessitate higher intake of calories, protein, and necessary vitamins and minerals by children to fuel high growth rates. Make sure they eat a variety of foods from all food groups with an emphasis on lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Include snacks between meals to keep energy levels up and to avoid fatigue. It should also be ensured that proper hydration is encouraged, and regular exercise is maintained to facilitate overall health and growth.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: ‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi Hadith, 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls.’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1952, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘No father gives a better gift to his children than good manners.’ Supporting a child through a growth spurt nutritionally aligns with the Islamic principles of providing for one’s offspring and ensuring their well-being. By offering wholesome, balanced meals and fostering healthy habits, parents fulfil their responsibility to nurture their child’s physical and spiritual development.
