How do I request an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?

Parenting Perspective

Applying Directly to Your Local Authority

Requesting an EHCP can feel complicated, but it is an important step to make sure your child’s needs are properly supported at school. In the UK, you can apply directly to your local authority for an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment. You do not have to wait for the school to do this for you.

Gathering Clear Evidence

Start by gathering clear evidence about your child’s difficulties. This might include reports from teachers, your child’s learning plan, medical letters or any assessments by professionals. Keep a detailed record of how your child’s needs affect their learning, social life and daily routines.

Writing a Personal Statement

It helps to write a personal statement in simple, everyday words. Explain your concerns and include real examples that show why the support your child is getting now is not enough. Send this statement along with any reports to the SEN department at your local authority. Most councils have a specific form you can find on their website.

Understanding the Process and Seeking Support

Once you submit your request, the local authority must reply within six weeks to let you know if they will carry out an assessment. If they refuse, remember you have the right to appeal. You do not have to face this process alone. Many parents find it helpful to speak to their local SENDIASS service or national charities like IPSEA, which offer free advice and guidance.

Trust that you are not causing trouble by asking for an EHCP. You are standing up for your child’s right to an education that helps them feel secure, understood and valued. Your efforts now can make a real difference to their future.

Spiritual Insight

Islam honours parents who advocate for their children with sincerity and patience, even when the process feels overwhelming.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nisa (4), Verse 135:

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice… ‘

This Ayah reminds us that seeking what is fair and needed for your child is not selfish, it is part of fulfilling your duty.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3671, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Be kind to children and perfect in your upbringing of them.

This Hadith Shareef teaches that caring for your child’s unique needs is an act of Ibadah. Make sincere Dua for guidance, wisdom, and the right words to express your child’s story. Stay calm and firm in your communication, even if you face delays or resistance. Trust that Allah Almighty sees the extra hours you spend gathering paperwork, writing letters, and sitting through meetings. None of your effort is wasted, each step you take for your child’s well-being brings reward and Barakah. May your steadfastness open doors that strengthen your child’s learning, confidence and spiritual growth, under the gentle mercy of Allah Almighty.
