How do I reintroduce bedtime rituals like reading together when screens have replaced them?

Parenting Perspective

If screens are now the default bedtime routine in your home, a sudden ban is likely to be met with resistance. The key to reintroducing reading is to make the transition gradual and inviting. You could begin by adding just five minutes of reading after their usual screen time. It is crucial to choose books that genuinely capture their imagination, such as funny stories or adventure tales, so they start to associate reading with pleasure rather than a chore.

Pair and Reduce Gradually

The most effective method is to pair the old habit with the new one. For example, you might watch one short programme together and then agree to read one chapter of a book before turning out the lights. Over time, you can gradually reduce the screen time while extending the reading time. The goal is for the shared reading to eventually become the most anticipated part of the bedtime routine.

Make Reading a Sensory Experience

Aim to make reading a special sensory experience. Create a cosy atmosphere by dimming the lights and snuggling up with a soft blanket. Reading in a calm, gentle voice adds to the soothing environment. Giving your child the power to choose the story, or even to act out the characters’ voices, makes the experience interactive and fun. The more enjoyable the ritual feels, the less they will miss the screen.

Spiritual Insight

Islamic teachings place a high value on connecting with sacred words and the remembrance of Allah, which can be nurtured through peaceful family rituals.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 45:

(O Prophet Muhammad ) Convey to them what has been revealed upon you from the Book (noble Quran), and establish prayers; as indeed, praying restrains (mankind) from immoralities and all those irrational actions; and the remembrance of Allah (Almighty) is the greatest (form of assistance and guidance for mankind)…’

This verse highlights the importance of reciting from the Book of Allah and remembering Him. Reading good stories together as a family, especially those with moral lessons, can be a beautiful form of shared remembrance and a way to build a bond rooted in goodness.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 359b, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The most beloved words to Allah are the words of remembrance.’

By choosing to end the day with a calming ritual like reading, you are not just helping your child to sleep peacefully; you are also fostering a habit that nourishes the soul and fills the home with beloved words, strengthening your family bond.
