How do I reduce sugar without depriving my child?

Parenting Perspective

Cutting down on sugar does not starve a child but switching added sugars with naturally sweet, healthy foods. Phase out sugary snacks and beverages by providing fruits, smoothies made at home, or yoghurt with honey as an alternative. Steer clear of packaged foods with concealed sugars by paying close attention to labels. Use natural sweeteners such as dates or mashed banana to sweeten foods at home. Promote water instead of sugary drinks. Make sweet foods occasional treats instead of daily foods. Teach children sensitively why cutting back on sugar is better for energy and health without punishing them.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 27: ‘Indeed, those who are extravagant (i.e. wasteful of their wealth) these are the brothers of the Satan…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2518, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Avoid that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.’ These references guide moderation and caution with harmful excesses such as sugar, promoting balanced, mindful eating.
