How do I prevent choking during feeding?

Parenting Perspective

Prevention of choking involves precise attention to the method of preparing food and feeding a baby. Always watch over feeding time. Feed your baby in an upright position and never while lying down or playing. Start with pureed or soft, mashed food and transition to lumpier textures as chewing progresses. Stay away from hard foods like raw carrots, whole grapes, nuts, or popcorn during the first two years. Chop food into small, bite-sized pieces, and practice slow eating. Do not rush or distract babies while feeding them. Practice self-feeding when they are ready, but only with safe, suitable foods.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 31: ‘and do not abort your children for fear of poverty, for it is We (Allah Almighty) Who provides nourishment for them and for you…’ What we can see from how this verse promotes care and safety in nurturing children is the importance of child welfare. Vigilance and trust in Allah Almighty are key to protecting and raising children in a safe way. This notion of vigilance and guardianship is further supported in a Hadith of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 893, and in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1829 that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock…’ This Hadith emphasises the duty of care and vigilance every parent has over their child, which includes feeding them safely and attentively. Preventing choking is a part of fulfilling that trust and responsibility by being mindful, cautious, and nurturing during feeding. These references remind parents that they are accountable for all aspects of the wellbeing of their children, including ensuring safe feeding practices.
