• ‘It took a long time, but you stayed steady and saw it through.’ 

These comments teach your child that value lies not just in the result, but in the character, they displayed while working towards it. 

Reinforce Inner Strengths 

Connect their effort to long-term strengths such as focus and resilience. For example, you could say, ‘That kind of patience is a skill that will help you so much in your studies and in life.’ This turns praise into encouragement that extends beyond the immediate task, teaching them that consistency has benefits even when an activity feels dull. Over time, children begin to internalise that persistence is a part of their identity, not just a response reserved for enjoyable moments. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islam places great honour on patience (sabr) and perseverance, especially when a task feels burdensome or slow. Praising a child’s persistence, therefore, is not just about recognising their willpower; it is about connecting them to a quality that is beloved by Allah Almighty. 

The Quranic Command to Persevere 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 200: 

‘O you who are believers, be patient, and be resilient, and be constant, and attain piety from Allah (Almighty) so that you may be successful.‘ 

This verse directly links success in this life and the qualities of patience and endurance. When parents affirm their child’s persistence in everyday tasks, they are helping to nurture a habit that beautifully reflects this divine guidance. 

The Prophetic Value of Steadfastness 

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6462, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are continuous, even if they are few.’ 

This hadith teaches that steady, consistent effort carries immense weight with Allah Almighty, even if the action itself seems small. By praising a child’s persistence through a long or dull task, parents connect this everyday display of patience with a profound spiritual principle. This helps a child understand that pushing through boredom is more than just endurance; it is an act of training the soul for greater consistency in faith and in life.
