How do I keep instructions clear at airports and stations?

Parenting Perspective

Airports and stations can be a storm for the senses, with their loud announcements, rushing crowds, and flashing signs. For a child, this chaos can make it almost impossible to hold onto long instructions or to remember rules. Clarity in these environments comes not from giving more directions, but from offering fewer, simpler, and more predictable ones.

Anchor Understanding Before the Rush

A child’s ability to process information is at its peak when they are calm. It is therefore best to give important instructions before you enter a busy area. For instance, at the car or at the terminal entrance, you could say, ‘We must walk together. When I say ‘stop’, you need to freeze.’ It is important to keep your tone gentle but firm, and to always use the same short phrases. In loud spaces, a familiar word or gesture will cut through the noise more effectively than a new one.

Use Visual and Physical Cues

It is better to avoid complex sentences, such as, ‘Stay close and do not wander off while I check the screen.’ Instead, use clear gestures, like pointing or a light touch on the shoulder, to regain their attention. You can also assign them a role to keep their mind focused, such as being in charge of watching for the gate number. Giving your child a purposeful task can transform their distraction into a sense of cooperation. For older children, it is helpful to establish clear checkpoints: ‘If we get separated, stay right where you are until I find you.’

Practise Calm Listening

You can rehearse ‘busy place listening’ at home. Stand in the kitchen with some mild background noise and give your child short directions like, ‘Touch your nose,’ or, ‘Stand beside me.’ Praise every successful attempt to focus: ‘You listened so well even when it was noisy. That is great attention.’ These small exercises strengthen their ability to filter information and to respond calmly under pressure. Above all, avoid yelling across a crowd. Instead, stay physically close and use your calm, grounded presence as your child’s anchor.

Spiritual Insight

Islam honours calm leadership and conscious action, even in the middle of noise and movement. Airports and stations, with all their rush and urgency, are real-world classrooms for teaching a child sabr (patience) and tadabbur (deliberate awareness). Finding clarity in the chaos begins with a calm heart.

Finding Focus in a World of Distraction

The Quran reminds believers that even in our travel and movement, there should be a sense of balance, walking with purpose, not with panic. Teaching your child to move through an airport with awareness and calm is an act of gratitude for this divine ease.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 15:

It is He who has made for you the Earth subservient (to your needs); so, walk (freely) amongst its marvels; and eat of the nourishment He (Allah Almighty) has provided for you; and to Him is the (ultimate) Resurrection.

The Prophetic Wisdom of Composure

The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provides a beautiful model of patience under pressure. This is a powerful principle for a parent to remember in a busy public space.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 26, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The one who shows patience, Allah will give him patience; and no one is given a gift better and more comprehensive than patience.’

When you demonstrate calmness and clarity amid public noise, you gift your child this same strength. Every composed instruction becomes a living lesson in sabr, a quiet power that steadies both your voice and your heart.

Keeping your instructions clear in airports and stations is about teaching your child to find their focus amid the commotion, a lesson that reaches far beyond travel. When you speak less but mean more, and guide through your calm presence instead of your volume, you create a sense of safety that is built on trust.

Spiritually, these moments are a reflection of a sacred rhythm: order within movement, patience within pressure, and awareness within noise. By practising a gentle authority in crowded places, you are helping your child to embody the balance that Islam calls for, moving through life’s busiest spaces with dignity, discipline, and a deep faith in the protection of Allah Almighty.
