Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 15:
‘It is He who has made for you the Earth subservient (to your needs); so, walk (freely) amongst its marvels; and eat of the nourishment He (Allah Almighty) has provided for you; and to Him is the (ultimate) Resurrection.’
This verse reminds us that the blessings of food and the earth are entrusted to us by Allah Almighty. When children help with meal preparation, even in the simplest ways, they begin to understand that eating is not just consumption but an engagement with Allah Almighty’s provision. Involving them in safe, purposeful ways helps them connect gratitude with daily life.
It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 495, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Teach your children to pray when they are seven, and beat them lightly for neglecting it at ten, and separate them in beds.’
Although this hadith specifically refers to the teaching of Salah, it demonstrates the principle of introducing habits and responsibilities early with consistent guidance. In the same way, involving toddlers in meal preparation lays the groundwork for responsibility, care, and mindfulness. With patience and safety, parents’ model that every small act — even washing vegetables or setting napkins, is part of learning to live with gratitude and responsibility before Allah Almighty.
