How do I introduce peanuts safely?

Parenting Perspective

Peanuts can be introduced safely at 6-12 months, except in a child with high risk for allergy (severe eczema or egg allergy). In these children, seek medical advice before introducing. Introduce a small quantity of smooth peanut butter in other soft foods such as yoghurt or porridge. Avoid giving intact or chopped peanuts because they are a choking hazard. Introduce the new food in the morning and observe intently for signs of allergic reactions like hives, swelling, vomiting, or shortness of breath. Take 2–3 days before introducing other allergens to observe any response clearly.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 3: ‘You are prohibited from: (eating) dead animals; and (drinking) blood; and (eating) pig meat; and that (meat) which has been dedicated (sacrificed) except in the name of Allah Almighty…’ It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 3815, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Yes, O servants of Allah, seek treatment, for Allah Almighty has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it – except one disease.’ These teachings stress avoiding what is harmful and proceeding with caution. Introducing peanuts gradually, with awareness, aligns with this guidance.
