How do I help my teen make healthy choices at school?

Parenting Perspective

Assisting adolescents to make good choices in school begins at home. Prepare healthy school lunches whenever it is possible and teach them to read labels and select whole foods. Instruct them to stay away from highly processed foods and pop. Encourage them to question the origin of food and pick Halal and healthy choices. Equip them with knowledge of how food affects energy, concentration, and emotional health. Instil a sense of self and self-confidence in making autonomous, healthy choices, even within peer-influenced social settings.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 168: ‘O mankind! Consume from the Earth that which is lawful and pure (qualitative); and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; indeed, he is your blatant enemy’ It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih 2787, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A body nourished with Haraam will not enter Paradise.’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2518, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.’ Educating teens to choose healthy and Halal options is both a nutritional and spiritual duty. Teaching discernment, self-awareness, and responsibility reflects Islamic parenting and ensures that teens uphold both their physical and Deen-related obligations.
