How do I explain that Allah Almighty knows and understands our feelings?

Parenting Perspective

Use Simple, Comforting Words

Many children feel confused when they experience big emotions they cannot fully explain. Some may worry that no one truly understands what is in their heart. Teaching your child that Allah Almighty knows every feeling, even the ones they cannot say out loud, can give them deep comfort and hope. Use simple words: ‘Even when you feel something but cannot find the words, Allah Almighty already knows.’

Talk in Everyday Moments

Talk about this idea in everyday moments. When your child is sad or scared, say, ‘Allah Almighty knows you feel this way, and He cares for you more than anyone else can.’ Use stories or bedtime chats to remind them that Allah Almighty understands every secret thought and hidden tear. You could ask, ‘Do you know that even the feelings you do not tell me, Allah Almighty already knows them?’ This helps your child to feel safe and loved. Praise your child when they open up to you about their feelings, no matter how small. Remind them that talking to you or making Dua is part of showing trust in Allah Almighty’s mercy. Over time, your calm words will help them feel that they are never alone with what they carry inside.

Spiritual Insight

Islam beautifully teaches us that Allah Almighty is closer to us than anyone else could ever be. He knows every secret, every fear, and every hope in our hearts. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Qaaf (50), Verse 16:

And indeed, We have created mankind, and so We have full knowledge of all the (thoughts) he murmurs within himself; and We (Allah Almighty) are more closer to him than his jugular vein. ‘

Sharing this with your child reassures them that Allah Almighty understands even what they cannot explain.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3372, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Dua is worship.

Even when they cannot find the right words, their quiet whispers or tears are heard and accepted as a form of worship by Allah Almighty. Encourage your child to say a small prayer when they feel misunderstood: ‘Ya Allah, You know what is in my heart. Please help me feel calm.’ This gentle connection teaches them that they never have to hide their feelings from their Lord. By growing up with this trust, they will carry a deep sense of safety, knowing that every part of their heart is known, held, and guided by Allah Almighty’s perfect care.
