How do I encourage regular Qur’an memorisation alongside academics?

Parenting Perspective

Choosing the Right Time and Pace

The process of memorising the noble Quran alongside other studies can feel intimidating at first, but steady progress is possible when approached with calmness and care. Start by choosing a time when your child is rested and focused, for many families, early mornings after Fajr or before other lessons begin work best. Keep sessions short and realistic; it is far better for your child to truly know a few lines by heart than to rush through pages they do not retain.

Tracking Progress and Praising Effort

Keep a special notebook to track what has been memorised and review earlier passages regularly so they become strong and lasting. Praise your child for their effort and consistency, not just for how many verses they learn, this builds confidence and a genuine love for the process. Small rewards, like a family treat when a Surah is completed, can make the journey joyful and memorable.

Creating a Positive and Gentle Atmosphere

Create an atmosphere that feels positive and gentle, so memorisation does not feel like a burden tacked onto schoolwork. If your child struggles, break verses into smaller parts or encourage them to recite aloud in a sing-song voice to help words settle in their heart. Above all, remember that this is not a race, you are nurturing a life-long bond with the noble Quran, InshaAllah, one small, sincere step at a time.1

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, memorising the noble Quran is one of the most honourable forms of knowledge.2

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5027, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.

This Hadith Shareef is a beautiful reminder that every small effort counts, even a single line learned with sincerity is precious in the sight of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty also tells us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qamar (54), Verse 17:

And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? ‘

This Ayah reassures you that memorisation is made possible when approached with trust and patience. Rather than separating Qur’an from academics, show your child that both are part of seeking knowledge for Allah Almighty’s sake. Make Dua as a family, asking Allah Almighty to open your child’s heart to His words. Keep the environment calm and remind your child that every verse they carry in their heart will light their path in this world and the next. This gentle, steady approach will make memorisation feel like a blessing woven naturally into daily life.
