How do I deal with constant requests for junk food?

Parenting Perspective

Handling repeated junk food demands calls for patience, firm boundaries, and education. Parents need to limit the provision of unhealthy snacks at home, swapping them with healthy alternatives like fresh fruits, nuts, yoghurt, or homemade sweets. Gently explaining why junk food is unhealthy educates children without making them feel deprived. Treats should be an occasional delight, not an everyday staple. Stable meal and snack routines curb hunger-fuelled junk food cravings. Engaging children in shopping and cooking encourages healthy eating. Children are greatly influenced by the eating habits of parents; copying good nutrition is important. Gradually, children learn to prefer healthy foods and accept restrictions on unhealthy foods, protecting their health.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 27: ‘Indeed, those who are extravagant (i.e. wasteful of their wealth) these are the brothers of the Satan…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2518, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.’ These teachings urge moderation, avoidance of harmful excess, and wise decision-making for the benefit of body and soul.
