How do I choose safe, Islamic-friendly online resources?

Parenting Perspective

Be Clear About What You Are Looking For

Choosing safe, Islamic-friendly online resources can feel overwhelming with so many options available. Start by being clear about what you are looking for. Aim for resources that are educational, age-appropriate and in line with your family’s values.

Seek Recommendations and Preview Content

Look for websites or apps that come recommended by other Muslim families, trusted teachers, or reputable review sites. Whenever possible, preview a lesson or video yourself before letting your child watch it. Check that the content does not include anything that goes against your core principles. Even small things like inappropriate words or pop-up adverts can affect your child’s learning experience.

Supervise and Communicate Openly

When trying new resources, keep your child nearby so you can see how they respond and discuss anything that makes them uncomfortable. Talk openly with them about what to do if they ever come across something that feels wrong or confusing.

Create a List of Approved Resources

It can help to make a simple list of approved websites, apps, or channels your child can use. Involve them in choosing these resources so they understand that being true to Islamic values is more important than following every new trend. Over time, this thoughtful approach will teach your child that what they watch and learn should always help protect their heart, mind and faith.

Spiritual Insight

Islam reminds us that every resource we choose for our children is part of our Amana, our trust and responsibility.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Tahrim (66), Verse 6:

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones… ‘

This Ayah reminds us that guarding what enters our children’s hearts and minds is part of our duty.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1829a, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for his flock.

Share this wisdom with your child in age-appropriate ways: explain that not every video or game is good for us, even if everyone else is watching. Encourage them to come to you if they ever feel unsure about something online, praise their honesty so they trust you more. Make Dua together asking Allah Almighty to protect their hearts from anything harmful and to fill their learning with Barakah. Over time, your child will see that safe, beneficial online choices are part of living Islam daily, not out of fear but out of love for what pleases Allah Almighty. By modelling this, you help them build lifelong habits of using the digital world with wisdom, care, and a sense of accountability, InshaAllah.
