How do I balance live online classes with offline activities?

Parenting Perspective

The Importance of a Deliberate Balance

Live online classes can be a real blessing in the modern home-school environment, giving children access to teachers and subjects you may not feel confident teaching yourself. However, too much time online can also leave children restless, tired, or disconnected from real life. Finding balance starts with being deliberate.

Blending Online Learning with Offline Activities

Look carefully at your weekly timetable and space online sessions so they do not run back-to-back. Build in breathing space between lessons so your child can move their body, play in the garden, or simply rest. Blend online learning with offline activities whenever you can. For example, follow up an online science lesson with a nature walk or a simple experiment at the kitchen table.

Adding Practical, Screen-Free Tasks

Add practical tasks, family reading, or craft projects to help lessons feel real away from the screen. Gently remind your child that learning does not only happen through a device. The real world is full of lessons that help build skills, character, and inner calm.

Your own example matters too. When you show you can put aside your devices to be fully present, you teach your child that balance is possible and valuable. In time, they will learn that technology is a tool, not a crutch, and that real growth happens when learning and life come together in a healthy way.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us to keep moderation in all things, remembering that our bodies, eyes, and minds have rights over us.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 67:

And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate. ‘

This Ayah reminds us that balance is a virtue in every part of life.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised moderation in worship:

Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you…

If moderation is vital even in acts of worship, how much more so when managing screens? Talk to your child about how offline activities help them rest their eyes, stretch their bodies, and give their hearts time to remember Allah Almighty. Make Dua together for Barakah in time spent learning on and off the screen. Encourage your child to pause during breaks for a short Salah or simple Dhikr, this grounds them and reminds them that true knowledge is not just about facts but about gratitude and connection to the One who gave us our minds. Over time, this balance creates habits that protect your child’s well-being and nurture a mindset of Sabr, Tawakkul, and purposeful learning that flows naturally from the screen into the real world, InshaAllah
