How can we help our child understand that influencers often present a curated, unrealistic version of life?

Parenting Perspective

Decoding the ‘Perfect’ Picture

Help your child grasp the concept of curation by explaining that influencer content is a highlight reel, not the full story. Relate it to something familiar, like how a family creates a photo album by choosing only the happiest pictures. Influencers do the same but on a much larger scale, carefully filtering out their struggles, messy rooms, and ordinary, everyday moments

Grounding in Real-Life Examples

Make the concept more tangible by discussing the difference between online posts and real life among people you know. You can gently point out how a friend’s holiday photos show perfect moments, but do not include the stress of travel or a rainy day. This helps your child see that this gap between reality and presentation is normal and not something to feel insecure about.

Revealing the ‘Behind-the-Scenes’

Gently introduce the idea that most popular content is heavily edited and professionally staged. A great way to illustrate this is to watch a ‘behind-the-scenes’ video together, which shows the lighting, multiple retakes, and editing that go into creating a single ‘effortless’ post. This demystifies the process and exposes the illusion of perfection

Fostering Gratitude for Their Own Reality

Shift your child’s focus from comparison to gratitude. Encourage them to value their own unique blessings, relationships, and experiences, which bring true, lasting happiness that cannot be captured on a screen. This practice of gratitude helps build a strong appreciation for their own life, protecting them from the discontent that online comparisons can create.

Spiritual Insight

Islam guides us to look past superficial appearances and find contentment in what Allah has given us.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 14:

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire… but with Allah is the best return…‘

This verse teaches a fundamental lesson about worldly life. The curated images and lifestyles shown online are designed to appear beautiful and desirable, but true value and success are found in what is pleasing to Allah, not in fleeting appearances.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a practical tool to combat feelings of inadequacy and envy.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, 466, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for it is more suitable that you do not belittle the favours of Allah upon you.‘

This profound advice is the perfect antidote to the culture of comparison fuelled by social media. It encourages children to cultivate gratitude by focusing on their own blessings, which protects their hearts from envy and helps them appreciate the unique reality Allah has blessed them with.
