How can shared hobbies like cooking or gardening teach my child that joy can come from slower processes?

Parenting Perspective

Shared, hands-on hobbies are a perfect way to counterbalance the instant gratification of the digital world. They naturally teach children that some of the most rewarding experiences unfold slowly, step by step.

Showing the Beauty of Gradual Progress

When your child helps plant a seed and sees it sprout days later, or mixes ingredients and watches a dish slowly bake, they experience the unique satisfaction of gradual progress. Be sure to point out each stage so they learn to value the journey as much as the final result.

Building Anticipation and Reward

These hobbies have a built-in sense of anticipation. The smell of a meal cooking or the daily check on a growing plant keeps excitement alive without needing instant results. This slow build of reward teaches patience and helps your child connect effort with eventual satisfaction.

Encouraging Mindful Involvement

Hobbies like cooking and gardening engage all the senses, from smelling herbs to feeling the soil. This sensory engagement naturally draws a child into the present moment, shifting their focus away from fast-paced digital stimulation and towards a richer, more grounded experience.

Linking Effort to Shared Joy

The final result is not just a personal achievement; it is a shared celebration. When your child sees that the work they contributed to brings happiness to the whole family, they learn that slow processes can lead to a deeper joy

By making these hobbies regular parts of your routine, you offer your child repeated opportunities to practise patience, notice details, and find fulfilment in gradual effort.

Spiritual Insight

Islam encourages actions that require care, patience, and sincerity. It places great value on the blessings that come from mindful, beneficial work, such as cultivating the earth or preparing food for one’s family.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 11:

He (Allah Almighty) causes to grow for you with that (water), the crops, and the olives, and the date palms and grapes, and many other kinds of fruits; indeed, in this there are Signs (of the infinite truth) for those nations that ponder (with logic and reason).

This reminds us that the growth of our sustenance is a gradual process, reflecting Allah’s wisdom and providing a sign for those who take the time to reflect.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2320, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘There is no Muslim who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but that it is regarded as a charitable gift for him.’

This teaches us that patient, effort-based work like planting is not only rewarding in this life but is also a source of ongoing charity and reward in the Hereafter.

By engaging your child in these hobbies, you help them to see that true satisfaction comes from processes that require patience, care, and steady effort. These are lessons that will benefit both their character and their connection with Allah.
