How can rituals like family meals or weekly walks support long-term emotional bonding?

Parenting Perspective

Rituals that are shared provide emotional pillars across life’s phases. During family meals without electronics, people may talk, make eye contact, and laugh together. Weekly walks offer unstructured opportunities for interaction: you can hear what they have to say, think about it, or reply. Shared memory and identity are shaped over time by these recurrent events: ‘we are a family that does this together.’ Rituals that are dependable foster stability and connections that are rich in narrative.

Spiritual Insight

Rituals echo the inherent value of regularity and unity in Islam. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al An’aam (6), Verse 141: ‘…and donate the due (portion to the poor) on the day of its harvest…’ Marking regular moments of thanks and presence with family is a iritual act. It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3287, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is in being together.’ Faith-based rituals strengthen ties and welcome Barakah into the household.
