How can parents respond when a child copies slang or jokes from online trends that are inappropriate?

Parenting Perspective

It is very common for children and teenagers to mimic slang and jokes they encounter on online platforms, often without fully understanding their meaning or origins. At times, this language can be crude, disrespectful, or carry harmful undertones. While a parent’s natural reaction might be shock or disappointment, reacting harshly can embarrass the child and make them defensive. A calm, educational approach is far more effective, helping them to understand why certain language is inappropriate while also offering better alternatives.

Correct Without Humiliating

If you hear your child using an inappropriate phrase, it is important to avoid shaming them, especially in front of others. It is better to take them aside and speak privately. You could ask gently: ‘I know you have probably heard that word online, but do you know what it actually means?’ This opens the door for reflection instead of rebellion

Explain the Impact of Words

Help your child to understand that our words have a real impact on our character and our relationships. You could explain: ‘When we use crude or disrespectful language, even as a joke, it can lower the respect others have for us and make harmful behaviour seem normal.’ Connecting their words to their own dignity helps them to see the bigger picture

Provide Positive Alternatives

Suggest and encourage cleaner, more intelligent forms of expression and humour. You can show them positive role models, such as speakers, writers, or other Islamic influencers, who are known and respected for their ability to be witty, kind, and engaging. This shows that good communication uplifts rather than offends

Model Good Speech at Home

Children are excellent imitators of their parents’ behaviour. Parents who make a conscious effort to use respectful, thoughtful language, even when they are joking or upset, provide a powerful, lived example. This reinforces the idea that communication can be fun and expressive without being inappropriate.

By correcting your child’s language firmly but kindly, you can teach them that the words they choose are not just about fitting in, but about honouring their own values and self-respect.

Spiritual Insight

Islam places an immense weight and importance on the words we use. While humour and joking are permitted and even encouraged, they must never be used in a way that degrades others, involves falsehood, or normalises anything that Allah Almighty has forbidden.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Qaaf (50), Verses 18:

(Man) is unable to utter a single word, without him being closely observed (and all actions being recorded), who is always present.

This powerful verse reminds us that every single word we speak is recorded and that our speech is a serious matter of accountability before Allah.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 1515, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A man may say a word pleasing to Allah without considering it of any significance, but because of it Allah raises him in status. And a man may say a word displeasing to Allah without considering it of any significance, but because of it he will fall into the Hellfire.’

This profound teaching clarifies that even our most casual words carry an immense weight and can have a significant impact on our standing in the Hereafter.

By grounding conversations about online slang and jokes in these faith principles, parents can help their children to realise that their speech is a direct reflection of their character and their belief. Over time, this helps them to learn that humour and self-expression can still be fun, but that they should always be guided by respect, dignity, and the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
