How can parents model gratitude for stillness so children see it as a blessing?

Parenting Perspective

Show Stillness as Enjoyable, Not Empty

Children often equate silence with boredom. Parents can change this perception by visibly enjoying quiet moments. Instead of rushing to fill a silence with noise, a parent can sit peacefully with a cup of tea or a book. By saying something aloud like, ‘Alhamdulillah, it feels so peaceful when everything is quiet,’ they vocally connect stillness with comfort and gratitude, teaching children to do the same.

Make Stillness a Part of Family Rituals

Parents can integrate quiet into daily life through small, natural rituals. This might involve sitting together in silence for a few minutes after prayer, or taking a walk without any devices. These shared experiences teach children that calm is not emptiness but a form of quality time. Vocally thanking Allah for these peaceful moments reinforces the idea that silence is a gift that refreshes both the mind and the heart.

Replace Noise with Mindful Presence

When a parent puts their device aside to simply be present, they teach a powerful lesson: stillness is not about ‘doing nothing,’ but about connecting on a deeper level with oneself, with family, and with Allah. Over time, children come to understand that an appreciation for quiet moments leads to stronger relationships and a real sense of inner peace.

Spiritual Insight

Peace is Found in Remembrance

The Quran teaches that true contentment and assurance for the heart are found in the remembrance of Allah. Stillness, when paired with this remembrance, is transformed from an empty void into a comforting and profound blessing.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ra’ad (13), Verse 28:

‘…Indeed, it is only with the remembrance of Allah (Almighty) that one can (and does) find peace of mind and heart.’

Gratitude for the Simplest Blessings

The prophetic tradition encourages gratitude not only for major provisions but also for the simple, often overlooked blessings in our lives, such as moments of peace, calm, and quiet.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, 2513, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Look at those who are lower than you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you do not belittle the favour of Allah.’

Embracing Stillness as a Gift

By modelling joy in stillness, weaving quiet moments into family rituals, and verbally expressing gratitude for them, parents teach their children that silence is not something to be escaped, but a blessing to be embraced. Over time, children can learn to see these calm moments as precious gifts that bring both barakah and a feeling of closeness to Allah Almighty.
