How can I use car journeys and errands for brain-building

Parenting Perspective

Car journeys and errands offer an overlooked opportunity to nurture your child’s mind. Turn the ride into a playful learning moment by naming colours, counting buses, or asking simple ‘what if’ questions. Describe your surroundings, point out road signs or buildings, and involve your child in reading words or recognising numbers. Even reciting daily Duas together or discussing the route engages language, memory, and observation skills. These shared moments make your child feel included and valued. When learning is embedded in everyday routines, it becomes joyful and natural. A short trip to the shop can become a treasure hunt for knowledge, curiosity, and connection.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot 29, Verse 20: ‘Say (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ): ‘Travel around the Earth so that you may (empirically) observe the origin of the creation…’’ Observation is a form of contemplation. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1805d, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions while travelling by asking them reflective questions and offering insight based on what they saw. Even the shortest of journeys can nurture understanding and spiritual consciousness when filled with meaningful engagement and thoughtful words.
