How can I teach patience when my child wants to order something online and expects same-day delivery?

Parenting Perspective

The convenience of same-day or next-day delivery has made the act of waiting feel almost unnecessary to many children. However, teaching them to accept and even find value in the waiting period is a simple but powerful way to strengthen their self-control and appreciation.

Set Clear Timeframes from the Start

When you place an order together, be clear about the actual delivery date from the beginning. You can mark it on a family calendar or create a simple countdown chart. This visual reminder manages their expectations and removes the shock of not receiving the item instantly.

Create a ‘Waiting Activity’

Plan a fun, related activity to do during the waiting period. This could be drawing what they imagine the item will look like, clearing a special space for it in their room, or learning more about it. This turns the wait into a period of positive and active anticipation.

Reflect Once It Arrives

When the package finally arrives, take a moment to reflect with them on the experience. You can say something like, ‘The wait made its arrival feel even more exciting, did not it?’ This helps them to connect the feeling of patience with increased enjoyment and gratitude.

Through these simple steps, the act of waiting for a delivery is transformed from a source of agitation into a valuable life lesson.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that the greatest rewards often follow periods of patience, and that a blessing that is waited for can sometimes carry more value and sweetness than one that arrives instantly.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Zumar (39), Verse 10:

‘…Indeed, those people that were resilient shall be rewarded with what is their due, without any limitations”.

This reminds us that patience is a quality so beloved and valued by Allah Almighty that its reward is beyond measure.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4031, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When Allah loves a people, He sends trials upon them. Whoever is patient is one of the patient, and whoever is angry is one of the angry.’

This teaches us that even a small test of our patience, like waiting for something we desire, can be a means to earn divine love and a greater reward.

By guiding your child through the simple wait for an online order, you are showing them in a very practical way how patience can transform anticipation into a richer, more meaningful joy.
