How can I stop devices from becoming a constant distraction?

Parenting Perspective

Creating a Simple Daily Plan

When schooling at home, devices can be a wonderful tool, but they can quickly turn into a major source of distraction if clear limits are not set. Start by agreeing on when devices will be used for learning and when they need to be put away. Make a simple daily plan. For example, you might use screens for morning lessons but switch to hands-on activities like crafts, outdoor play or reading aloud in the afternoon without any devices.

Managing the Environment and Setting an Example

Keep gadgets in shared family areas rather than bedrooms, so you can quietly keep an eye on how they are used. Teach your child to close any apps or tabs that are not needed during study time. If you work near your child, do the same yourself so you set an example.

The Importance of Breaks and Praise

Plan in regular breaks so your child can stretch, have a drink of water or chat for a few minutes. This helps manage the temptation to drift back to screens. Praise your child when they stay focused, even if it is just for fifteen or thirty minutes at a time in the beginning.

Over time, these simple habits show your child that devices are a means to an end, not the ones in charge of their time and attention. With your calm guidance, they will learn that balance and self-control make learning feel clear and peaceful.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us that our time and attention are blessings that must be protected.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Asr (103), Verses 1–3:

By time. Indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience. ‘

This Ayah gently reminds us that our moments are precious, once lost, they do not return.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6412, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.

Share this with your child so they understand that devices can quietly drain their time if they are not careful. Make Dua together before study time: O Allah, place Barakah in my time and protect me from distractions. Keep reminders visible, a small Ayah or Hadith on the study desk can help refocus wandering minds. Talk about what happens when we use our screens wisely versus when we waste time on them. Show your child how you manage your own distractions, putting your phone aside during Salah or family meals. When they see you living this balance, they learn that true success is not about avoiding screens altogether, but using them with wisdom, moderation, and a heart that remembers every moment is a trust from Allah Almighty, InshaAllah
