How can I spot disordered eating early on?

Parenting Perspective

Identifying disordered eating early includes being watchful for signs such as excessive concern with weight, food, and body image, restrictive eating habits, bingeing, purging, and excessive exercising. Other signs include sudden weight changes, avoidance of social foods, and verbalising negative feelings about one’s body. Early intervention is paramount, and parents should consult with healthcare workers if they observe these indicators.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: ‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith, 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls.’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1952, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘No father gives a better gift to his children than good manners.’ Recognising the signs of disordered eating early aligns with the Islamic principle of safeguarding one’s health and well-being. By being attentive to changes in eating behaviours and seeking timely intervention, parents can help prevent the progression of disordered eating and promote a healthy relationship with food.
