How can I reduce screen distractions like phones or TV while my child studies?

Parenting Perspective

Creating an Intentional Learning Space

Reducing screen distractions during study time begins with creating a peaceful, intentional learning space. Set up a dedicated ‘quiet corner’ free from television and mobile devices, stocked instead with learning tools, books, and calming elements like soft lighting or plants. Introduce the idea of a ‘focus box’ where both your and your child’s devices are kept during study time, modelling the habit yourself.

Framing Screen Time as an Earned Reward

Use a timer or visual clock to define study blocks and screen time separately. Frame screen use as something to look forward to, rather than something to have in the background. Say, ‘Let us complete this worksheet and then enjoy a screen break together.’ This shifts screen time from a passive distraction to an earned reward, teaching patience and focus.

Building Life Skills Through Consistent Rules

Children thrive when the environment supports their intentions. By helping them form the habit of concentrated learning time, you not only improve their academic outcomes but also build life skills like discipline and delayed gratification. Keep screen rules clear and consistent, but kind. When screen use is limited with love and explained with clarity, children do not feel deprived, they feel supported.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mu’minoon (23), Verse 3:

And those people that abstain from frivolous gossip. “

This verse honours those who avoid distractions and superficial engagement, choosing instead to protect their time and energy for what truly benefits them.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3976, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Part of someone’s being a good Muslim is leaving alone that which does not concern him.

This teaching is deeply relevant in today’s world, where digital noise can easily pull hearts and minds away from purposeful living.

Teaching children to turn away from distractions is not about deprivation. It is about helping them develop the focus and clarity needed to honour their own time and growth. When we show them how to choose presence over passive scrolling or entertainment, we teach them the spiritual discipline that echoes through both learning and worship.

By creating habits of intentional focus, supported by routines that honour learning and avoid excess, you guide your child towards a life rooted in purpose and Barakah. In this way, even turning off a screen becomes an act of devotion and care.
