How can I model balanced tech use when my work demands constant online presence?

Parenting Perspective

When your work demands a frequent online presence, modelling balance is less about counting the hours and more about demonstrating clear intention. It is crucial to let your child see the distinction between focused work and mindless scrolling. You can frame this verbally by saying, for instance, “I need to finish this report for work, and then my phone is going away so we can have our time together.” This simple narration helps your child understand that technology is a tool for a purpose, not just a constant distraction.

Make Your Boundaries Visible

Even with a demanding online workload, you can establish observable micro-boundaries. This might involve putting your phone in another room during meals or silencing all non-essential notifications during the bedtime routine. These small, visible acts show your child that while technology is a part of your life, it does not have to dominate every moment.

Balance Screen Use with Quality Offline Signals

When you are not working, make your offline presence count. Direct eye contact, physical touch, and active listening become especially powerful when your child understands that your time is limited. These moments of high-quality, focused attention can often carry more weight and build more security than the sheer number of hours you spend together.

Spiritual Insight

Islamic principles guide us towards moderation and purpose in all our actions, and this extends to how we interact with the tools and technologies of the modern world.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 67:

And it is those people that do not spend extravagantly, and are not miserly; and (act in such a way) that is a balanced format between these two (extreme characteristics)…

This verse, while speaking of wealth, teaches a universal principle of finding a wise and just middle path. Applying this to our time, it reminds us that balance is about our intention and avoiding the extremes of either complete neglect or total absorption.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1159, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. So give each their due right’

This comprehensive teaching highlights that our lives are a harmony of different responsibilities. We must strive to give each aspect its due, ensuring that our duties to our work, our family, and our own well-being are fulfilled without one overwhelming the others.

By allowing your child to see your clear boundaries, your purpose-driven use of devices, and your intentional offline presence, you can effectively model a healthy relationship with technology, even within a demanding digital career.
