How can I help my child with sensory issues avoid angry outbursts?

Parenting Perspective

Children who have sensory sensitivities, such as being sensitive to different textures, tastes, lights, or movements, can quickly become very emotional when they experience too much sensory input. This may result in unexpected reactions that appear aggressive but are based on unease. It is important to identify potential triggers, promote self-awareness, and collaboratively develop strategies for calming down.

Create a personalised sensory toolkit

  • Identify triggers like crowds, tight clothing, or scratchy fabrics
  • Select tools that meet their needs: soft clothing, weighted blankets, visual timers, calming visuals
  • Introduce calming aids such as stress toys or breathing apps for independent use

Practise and praise self-regulation routines

  • Rehearse calming strategies during peaceful moments
  • Acknowledge when tools are used appropriately
  • Gently redirect if tools are forgotten or overlooked

Over time, your child will learn to notice their body’s signals and respond in a way that reduces distress rather than escalating it. This promotes confidence in their ability to manage sensory input effectively.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in Surah Yunus (10), Verse 57:

O mankind, indeed, you have been granted enlightened direction from your Sustainer, and a cure for your hearts (‘Sadr’ is used to depict the spiritual gateway of the body which is around the heart but not the heart itself), and guidance and mercy for the believers. ‘

This verse highlights that guidance and healing include understanding one’s inner nature whether sensory or emotional and responding to it with compassion.

A comforting Hadith is found in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3689, where the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all things.

This teaching reminds us that gentleness starts within and extends to how we care for our children’s sensitivities.

Encourage your child to recite a short Dua when feeling overwhelmed:

O Allah, calm me.

By combining sensory self-care with spiritual mindfulness, children build resilience and learn to honour their feelings as part of their faith and well-being.
