How can I help my child use technology in a way that boosts Islamic learning?

Parenting Perspective

Making Islamic Learning a Shared Activity

Digital tools, when used intentionally, can become powerful gateways for nurturing your child’s Imaan. Begin by making Islamic learning a shared family activity. Designate a weekly ‘Deen and Screen’ time where you explore a short Qur’anic documentary, listen to the noble Quran with translation, or watch a child-friendly animation on the lives of the Prophets. Use technology that feels interactive, apps with Arabic games, Salah trackers, or Duas with voice recitation, making it both educational and engaging.

Encouraging Reflection and Ownership

Encourage your child to reflect and summarise: after watching or listening to something, ask, ‘What stood out to you?’ or ‘How might we act on that this week?’ This process not only deepens understanding but helps your child feel heard and valued. Let them present their favourite clip to the family, or create their own short voice note about a new Dua they learned. These small actions link Islamic learning with ownership, creativity, and joy. Importantly, make sure you are a part of the journey, children learn best when they see their parents engaged too.

Spiritual Insight

Technology, like any tool, holds the potential for great good when aligned with righteous intention.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 2:

…And participate with each other to promote righteousness and piety…

Facilitating Islamic learning through digital means is an act of collaboration in goodness, it transforms passive screen time into purposeful spiritual development.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 97, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Convey from me, even if it is one verse.

This Hadith invites us to spread knowledge in all its forms, and by extension, encourages the use of every available method, be it conversation, writing, or modern-day technology. Guiding your child to use digital tools to strengthen their Imaan is not just practical parenting, it is an act of worship and Da’wah.

Islamic apps that build memory through Nasheeds, websites that offer Seerah-inspired quizzes, or even animated explainers of Hadith allow your child to internalise Deen in a way that feels alive and present. Remind them that every moment spent learning about Islam, even through a screen, is seen and rewarded by Allah Almighty. Begin with Bismillah and end with Alhamdulillah, marking each session as sacred, rooted in gratitude and guided by purpose.

By merging faith and digital fluency, you show your child that the path to knowledge is not confined to books or Madrasah, it is everywhere, and Allah Almighty’s guidance is woven into every medium when we seek it sincerely.
