How can I help my child believe they can get better through practice and faith?

Parenting Perspective

Framing Effort and Growth Positively

Helping your child believe in progress begins with how you frame effort and growth. Instead of praising results alone, highlight the process. Say things like, ‘I saw how you kept trying even when it felt hard,’ or ‘Look how much you have improved since last week.’ These words build internal motivation. Gently remind them of moments in their own life where practice led to progress, learning to walk, talk, use a spoon, or recite a Surah. These memories affirm that effort and time do work.

Focusing on One Skill at a Time

Avoid overwhelming your child with too many goals at once. Guide them to focus on one skill or concept and then build on it steadily. Create a simple, consistent routine where practice becomes part of the day, not a burden. Use timers, gentle music, or visual cues to support this rhythm. When you notice even a small sign of growth, pause to celebrate it. Whether it is writing a letter more clearly or remembering a new word, let them feel your pride and encouragement. This teaches that growth is not about being perfect, but about staying patient and showing up each day.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 69:

And those people that endeavour (to please) Us (Allah Almighty); so, We (Allah Almighty) shall indeed, guide them (to those pathways) that lead to Us…. “

This Verse beautifully reassures us that sincere effort is always rewarded. It is not perfection that brings guidance, but the intention and the striving. Teaching your child to link their study and practice to this Verse helps them see that Allah Almighty is with them in their journey, cheering on every attempt.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5027, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.

This Hadith shows that even the act of learning, when done with sincerity and effort, places a person among the best in the eyes of Allah Almighty. When your child understands that they are not working alone, but are supported by Divine help and purpose, practice becomes more than repetition. It becomes an act of faith and self-belief.

By guiding your child to pair effort with trust in Allah Almighty, you are not just helping them grow in academics, you are building spiritual resilience. They begin to internalise that every small step, even if slow or imperfect, is meaningful. With practice and faith walking hand in hand, their confidence grows not just in their skills, but in themselves.
