How can I encourage sharing a single positive online find instead of doom-scrolling?

Parenting Perspective

Doom-scrolling can quickly drain a child’s energy, leaving them anxious, restless, or disengaged. Encouraging children to highlight one positive online find shifts their focus from endless consumption to mindful selection. This habit teaches them to use technology with purpose and helps the family enjoy screens as a source of learning, not stress.

Frame It as a Daily Sharing Ritual

Set aside a short moment, perhaps at dinner or bedtime, where each child shares one good thing they saw online: a funny clip, an inspiring story, or a useful fact. By making it a family activity, you replace endless scrolling with intentional reflection.

Emphasise Quality over Quantity

Say to your child: “Instead of watching everything, look for one thing worth showing us.” This gives them a filter for what they view and reduces passive consumption.

Model It Yourself

Share your own positive online find (a recipe, uplifting news, or a Quranic reminder) so they see the value of selective, purposeful sharing. Children are more likely to follow when they see parents modelling it naturally.

Affirm Their Effort

When they share, respond with interest: “That is a lovely find, thank you for showing us.” Praise reinforces that bringing one meaningful thing to the family is more rewarding than hours of browsing.

With consistency, this habit reframes online activity as a tool for joy, curiosity, and benefit, rather than endless distraction.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us to seek out goodness and avoid filling our hearts with harmful or useless matters. Guiding children to share one positive find reflects the Islamic principle of filtering what we consume and spreading benefit.

Qur’an Guidance

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Zumar (39), Verses 9:

‘…Say (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ): “Can there ever be parity between those people that have knowledge and those people that do not have knowledge?”; indeed, this is a source of realisation for those who seek a rational understanding.

This reminds us that seeking knowledge and benefit is more valuable than aimless consumption. Children learn that what they choose to engage with shapes their hearts and minds.

Hadith Reminder

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 5008, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.’

This teaches us that passively watching harmful content without resistance weakens faith, while choosing and sharing goodness is an active form of worship.

By encouraging the sharing of one positive online find daily, parents help children replace doom-scrolling with purpose. They learn that mindful use of media can spread light, benefit, and gratitude, aligning their digital habits with the values of ihsan and shukr.
