How can I choose helpful and Islamic-friendly apps and videos for my child?

Parenting Perspective

Look for a Blend of Learning and Values

Selecting digital resources for your child requires thoughtful curation and presence. Look for apps and channels that seamlessly blend academic learning with Islamic values. Examples include Miraj Stories, which offers animated Quranic narratives, Prophetic tales, and Islamic-themed games designed for children aged 4–9, and Muslim Kids TV, a platform featuring educational cartoons, nasheeds, STEM activities, and e-books, all grounded in halal content.

How to Evaluate an App

When evaluating an app, preview it first: check for age-appropriate visuals, positive messaging, interactive quizzes, and the ability to reinforce skills like Arabic, memorisation, or character-building. Ensure it encourages active participation, not just passive watching. Apps with features like voice recitation, animated storytelling, and parental controls allow you to guide your child’s online journey confidently. Choose resources that reflect your values, support critical thinking, and enrich both their academic and spiritual development.

Model Healthy Habits and Have Reflective Conversations

Handling screen time wisely also means modelling behaviour. Discuss what they watched or played and ask reflective questions such as, ‘What did you learn today? or ‘How did that story remind you of a Prophetic lesson?’ This ongoing dialogue reinforces the idea that digital content can be meaningful when viewed thoughtfully and in line with your family’s guidance.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, knowledge is both a blessing and a responsibility.

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 2:

This is a Book (Quran) in which there cannot be any doubt; guidance for those who seek piety. “

This verse establishes that divine guidance must be lived and understood, not merely recited. The same principle applies to digital learning: it must guide the heart as much as the mind.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 855d, that the Prophet ﷺ ensured that his teachings were relevant, timely, and suited to the audience’s needs. He adjusted his method, tempo, and tools to reach each listener effectively. When choosing apps or videos for your child, adopt this Prophetic wisdom, prioritise content that aligns with your child’s developmental stage and spiritual growth.

Let your selections reflect the Prophetic tradition: use resources that teach Duas, Qur’anic meaning, Prophetic examples, and moral values through engaging formats. Seek out apps that encourage creativity and community, like quizzes on Islamic history or interactive storytelling rooted in deed-based learning. And remember to instil conscious consumption: begin with Bismillah and conclude with Alhamdulillah, teaching your child that all learning, digital or otherwise, is an opportunity to connect with Allah Almighty.
