How can I channel big energy into safe outlets before it explodes?
Parenting Perspective
Some children seem to live at full volume, rarely sitting still. Their enthusiasm can be wonderful, but when that energy builds up without direction, it can quickly spill over into chaos, tantrums, or rough behaviour. The goal is not to ‘calm’ your energetic child into quietness, but to channel their natural drive into healthy, safe, and rewarding outlets. Big energy is not a problem to be fixed; it is a strength to be guided.
Understanding Big Energy
Children with intense energy are not ‘naughty’; they often experience emotions and stimulation more deeply than others. Their nervous systems are highly reactive, which means that excitement, frustration, and fatigue can all tip them into a state of overload. When we see an explosion of shouting, jumping on furniture, or sudden aggression, it usually means that their body has absorbed more energy than it can manage. Rather than waiting for a meltdown, providing proactive outlets can help your child to release their energy throughout the day, keeping their emotions balanced and their body regulated.
Turning Energy Into Strength
First, try to observe the patterns in your child’s energy. Notice when their energy tends to peak; is it in the morning, after school, or just before bed? Tracking these moments for a few days can help you to anticipate their needs rather than just reacting to their behaviour.
It is also helpful to schedule movement before stillness. Expecting a child to be still after a long period of inactivity rarely works. Instead, you can use short bursts of movement before times of focus, such as jumping on a mini trampoline before homework or having a two-minute dance party before the bedtime routine.
It is a good idea to offer physical outlets that match their mood. For excited energy, you can try outdoor play, ball games, or cycling. For frustrated energy, punching a pillow or stomping their feet to music can be a healthy release. When their energy is expressed through play, it becomes positive rather than destructive.
You can also create a ‘Big Energy Zone’ in your home by designating a safe area for loud, physical play. This could be a corner with soft mats, some cushions, or a small indoor trampoline.
Spiritual Insight
Your child’s high energy is a form of strength, but like any power, it must be channelled with responsibility. When you help your child to use their energy in a kind and safe way, you are teaching them to pair their ability with a sense of moral discipline.
Channelling Strength With Wisdom
The Quran beautifully connects the idea of strength with trustworthiness power that is guided by a sense of purpose.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qasas (28), Verse 26:
‘One (of the ladies) said: “O my father, employ him; indeed, he would become the best (person) you can employ, who is strong and trustworthy”.’
The Prophet’s ﷺExample of Balanced Energy
The teachings of our Prophet ﷺ show the importance of balance in all things: giving each aspect of our life its due. This principle applies even in childhood, with a balance between movement and rest, excitement and calm, action and reflection.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, and your wife has a right over you.’
By helping your child to respect these natural rhythms, you are guiding them towards a balance that honours both their body and their spirit. When you guide your child to run, climb, and explore with an awareness of their own boundaries, you are teaching them tazkiyah—a purification of the self through discipline. Their energy becomes not chaos, but creativity; not destruction, but direction.
Through your patience and planning, your child can learn that their strength is a trust from Allah, to be used with care, compassion, and purpose. In that balance between movement and mindfulness lies the seed of a lifelong serenity.
