How can flexibility in tech use still uphold Islamic values of moderation and discipline?

Parenting Perspective

Flexibility does not have to mean a loss of discipline. When handled with intention, it can actually reinforce the values you want to teach, showing that freedom and responsibility go hand in hand.

Set Clear Boundaries Even in Flexibility

Flexibility is not the removal of all limits; it is the thoughtful adjustment of them. For example, on a holiday, you might allow extra screen time but still require breaks for prayer and family meals. This shows that core principles remain intact even when the routine changes.

Use Flexibility as a Teaching Moment

Frame any extra time as a demonstration of your trust in them. You could say, ‘I am happy to be flexible today because I trust you to still be responsible.’ When children see flexibility as an opportunity to prove their maturity, they are more likely to respect the boundaries.

Keep Moderation Visible

Ensure you are also modelling moderation. If you relax your own screen rules for a special occasion, make sure you still demonstrate balance in other ways. This shows that moderation is a shared family value, not just a rule for children.

By linking flexibility with continued discipline, parents can ensure that children learn freedom is best enjoyed when balanced with responsibility.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, moderation (wasatiyyah) is a central, guiding principle that applies to every aspect of a believer’s life, from worship and spending to leisure and the use of technology.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 67:

‘And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate…’

This principle of avoiding extremes extends beyond wealth to how we spend our time and attention, guiding us towards a balanced and healthy life.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6463, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Follow the right course, be devoted, and give glad tidings’

This teaches us to aim for a balanced, moderate, and sustainable path in our actions. Parents can explain to children that flexibility should never lead to losing this balance, because Islam honours moderation in all things.
