Does too much sugar affect attention in children?

Parenting Perspective

Yes. Excessive sugar intake can negatively impact a child’s ability to focus, manage emotions, and retain information. When children consume large amounts of sugar, they may experience temporary spikes in energy followed by sharp drops, which can result in irritability, fatigue, and restlessness. This can make it difficult for them to concentrate or complete tasks that require sustained attention. Sleep disturbances are another common consequence, and without proper rest, learning becomes even harder.
While an occasional treat is part of joyful living, habitual high-sugar consumption can disrupt a child’s mood, behaviour, and cognitive performance. Replacing sweets with naturally sweet foods like fresh fruit, dates, or unsweetened yoghurt provides steady energy along with vital nutrients. Supporting your child’s nutrition in this way lays a foundation for clearer thinking and a calmer, more focused approach to learning.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan, Verse 67: ‘And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy but hold a medium way between those extremes.’ This beautiful guidance reflects the importance of moderation, even in what we eat. Islam does not forbid enjoyment but cautions against excess, which often leads to imbalance and harm.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5392, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved sweet things but never consumed them in excess. His life modelled self-control, balance, and awareness in everyday choices. Helping children develop a mindful relationship with food is not simply a health strategy, it is a spiritual practice. Teaching moderation with warmth and consistency nurtures gratitude and discipline, protecting the child’s emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. A balanced plate supports a balanced mind, and ultimately, a balanced life.
