Can sand, water, and mud play really build intelligence?

Parenting Perspective

Yes, sensory play with natural materials like sand, water, and mud is incredibly effective for building intelligence in young children. These materials offer rich, hands-on experiences that help develop the brain in multiple areas. When a child digs, pours, scoops, and moulds, they are not just playing. They are exploring early concepts of physics, cause and effect, measurement, texture, and change. These actions activate the sensory system and engage fine motor control, balance, and coordination. Sensory play also supports language development, as children describe what they are doing or experiment with new vocabulary to explain textures, temperatures, and actions.
Beyond cognitive stimulation, these elements promote emotional regulation. Playing with earth and water has a calming, grounding effect on the nervous system. It helps children process emotions, reduce stress, and feel centred. Many parents notice how their children become calmer, more focused, or even more expressive after spending time splashing in puddles or building in sand. This is because sensory input helps to organise the brain and bring balance to emotional energy.
Sand, water, and mud are also ideal for imaginative, open-ended play. There are no instructions or rules, the child decides what to build, explore, or invent. This type of play fosters creativity, problem-solving, and independence. It nurtures resilience, too, as children experiment, make mistakes, and adjust. These are skills essential for lifelong learning. Although such play can be messy, the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience. With simple boundaries and a change of clothes, parents can offer children one of the most natural and holistic ways to grow.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hijr (15), Verse 26: ‘And indeed, We (Allah Almighty) created mankind from clay and metamorphic black mud.’ This Verse reminds us of our origin, not from machines or theory, but from the soil of the earth. When children play with natural materials, they are not just engaging the senses. They are connecting to the very essence of human creation. This connection grounds them in humility, wonder, and a lived awareness of Allah Almighty’s creation.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2133, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ allowed children to play freely in open spaces, embracing their joy and creativity. He did not restrict their play with unnecessary severity but welcomed their natural inclinations. Play with earth, water, and mud is not only permissible, but also encouraged when done in a healthy, respectful manner. It reflects the child’s fitrah, their pure and instinctive nature, and supports a sense of peace and belonging in the world.
