Can I give honey to my infant?

Parenting Perspective

Honey should be excluded from the diet of children under one year old, even in minimal amounts. It may harbour (Clostridium botulinum) spores that are harmless to grown-ups but cause infant botulism, a rare but sometimes deadly disease in infants. The symptoms include weakness of muscles, difficulty in feeding, and respiratory distress. Past the age of one, a child’s digestive system is mature enough to process natural honey without harm. Until such time, sweetness can only be provided by fruits. Parents must be careful when checking food labels because honey is added sometimes to processed foods or children’s cereals or snacks.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 69: ‘…There is then extracted from their bellies (of the bees), a liquid (honey) of varying colours, in which there is cure for mankind…’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5684, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Let him drink honey.” So, he made him drink honey and he was cured.’ These references confirm the medicinal and spiritual value of honey but also support its use with care and wisdom especially when an infant’s health may be at risk.
