Are multivitamins necessary for babies?

Parenting Perspective

Multivitamins are not necessarily required if the baby is given a well-balanced diet that is consistent with his age. Breast milk or formula and Halal, age-specific solid food can provide most of the nutrients. But some vitamins, particularly vitamin D and iron, may fall short in some instances. For example, breastfed infants frequently require vitamin D supplementation because they have limited sun exposure. If an infant is a picky eater, or has special dietary needs, a physician can prescribe a multivitamin. Unprescribed, excessive vitamin use can create toxicity or imbalances. As such, supplementation should only be accomplished when indicated by the clinician. Food first is always the best, and vitamins should only be utilised when they are truly needed.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Taaha (20), Verse 81: ‘Eat of the purest of the things that We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and do not become idle there with (by forgetting the daily responsibilities.’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, and your wife has a right over you.’ These teachings emphasise balance, the importance of caring for the body, and avoiding excess supporting a mindful approach to using supplements only when truly needed.
