What do I do when homework “needs” the device and stalling begins?

Parenting Perspective

It is common for children to claim they “need the device” for homework, only for the line between genuine study and procrastination to blur. Arguments about whether they are working or stalling can wear parents down. A calm, structured approach helps maintain focus while keeping the atmosphere respectful.

Set Clear Homework Boundaries

Agree on rules before homework begins. Clear rules reduce arguments later.

  • Devices are used only for specific tasks (research, typing, calculator).
  • Once that task is finished, the device goes aside.
  • Keep the device in a visible place, not hidden in a bedroom.

Use Gentle Check-Ins, Not Accusations

Instead of “You are wasting time again!”, try:

  • ‘Show me what you are working on now.’
  • ‘Which part of the homework is next?’

This keeps accountability firm without hostility.

Break Tasks Into Steps

Children often stall because the work feels overwhelming. Help by chunking tasks. Step-by-step guidance reduces excuses.

  • ‘First, find the answer to this question online. Then write it down.’
  • ‘Let us finish two maths problems, then check what is left.’

Praise Honest Use of the Device

Highlight when they switch back quickly or stay on-task.

  • ‘I saw you check the information and return to writing. Well done.’
  • ‘You used the device responsibly today, that shows maturity.’

A mini-dialogue example:

Child: ‘I need my tablet for homework.’

Parent: ‘Okay. Which part of the homework needs it? Let us agree that once that is done, the tablet goes away until the rest is finished.’

Spiritual Insight

Devices are tools that can help or distract. Islam teaches us to use blessings with discipline and honesty, remembering that we are accountable for how we spend our time.

Accountability in Actions

This reminds us that every click, search, and use of technology is part of our responsibility before Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 36:

‘And do not pursue (to meddle in matters) with which you have no knowledge; indeed, your hearing (everything you heard), your sight (everything you observed), your conscience (everything you thought), in fact, all of these (your faculties) shall be called for questioning (on the Day of Judgment).’

The Prophet ﷺ on Truthfulness

This Hadith teaches that honesty in small matters, like using devices genuinely for homework, builds integrity in character and faith.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, 6094, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person.‘

By handling homework devices with calm structure, you teach your child that tools are for learning, not stalling. Over time, they learn that responsibility, honesty, and patience with tasks are as important as the homework itself values that shape success both in school and in faith.
