How can I help my child stay calm during competitive games?

Parenting Perspective

Competitive games often result in heightened emotional reactions among children. For some, these situations uncover underlying sensitivities, challenges with change, or a strong desire for control. A child may feel distressed when things do not go their way, especially if they associate their worth with winning. To prevent emotional outbursts:

  • Establish calming routines before games begin and practise deep breathing together
  • Set expectations: Winning is enjoyable, but being kind is more important
  • Agree on a simple calming phrase your child can use during the game

If upset arises, use a visual signal or a pause feature to stop the game and reflect on what is happening. Feeling frustrated is common, but that does not excuse disrespectful behaviour. When children observe adults staying composed during stressful moments, they begin to emulate that behaviour themselves.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 153:

O those of you who are believers, seek assistance (from Allah Almighty) through resilience and prayer, indeed, Allah (Almighty) is with those that are resilient. ‘

This verse connects perseverance not only to worship but to everyday life, including moments of playful tension.

It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari Hadith 6125, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Make things easy for the people, and do not make it difficult for them, and make them calm (with glad tidings) and do not repulse (them ).

This Hadith emphasises maintaining calm even during emotional provocation. Use this as a teachable moment: reflect with your child after games and ask, Were we patient players today? You may also recite together:

  • Rabbi yassir wa la tu’assir (O my Lord, make it easy and do not make it difficult.

This reinforces seeking ease with dignity and emotional maturity.
