How can parents explain why adhan or Quran recitation on devices should not be interrupted unnecessarily?

Parenting Perspective

Teach Respect for Sacred Sounds

A child might see the adhan or Quran playing on a device as just another audio file to be paused or skipped. A parent can gently explain the difference: ‘When the adhan or Quran is playing, it is not like a song. These are sacred sounds that call us to worship and guide our hearts.’ This helps a child to understand that while the source may be digital, the meaning is still divine.

Make It a Consistent Family Practice

A family can model this respect by pausing their conversations and activities when the adhan begins. Even if it is playing from a phone, parents should stop to listen and repeat the words, or sit quietly during a Quran recitation. Children learn the etiquette of reverence most effectively when they see it practised consistently by their parents

Explain the Spiritual Impact

Parents can also explain that giving these sounds our full attention brings barakah into the home. Saying, ‘When we stop everything to listen, we are showing Allah that His call and His words come first in our lives,’ helps a child to understand the spiritual benefit of being attentive. This links the act of respect to a positive outcome, encouraging them to value these moments.

Spiritual Insight

Attentiveness Invites Mercy

The Quran explicitly commands believers to listen with full attention when its verses are recited. This act of focused respect is not merely good manners; it is presented as a direct means of receiving the mercy of Allah.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 204:

‘And when the Quran is recited, so listen to it, and pay attention to it, so that you may receive mercy (from Allah Almighty).’

Responding to the Call of Allah

The prophetic tradition teaches that the adhan deserves an immediate and attentive response. It should not be ignored or interrupted, as it is a direct call from Allah to His servants, inviting them to prayer and success.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, 1066, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When you hear the call to prayer, respond to it.’

Honouring Allah Through His Words

By teaching reverence, modelling respectful behaviour, and connecting that behaviour to divine blessings, parents can help their children understand that sacred sounds deserve our full attention, whether they come from a mosque’s minaret or a mobile phone. This teaches them over time that honouring the adhan and the Quran is a way of honouring Allah Himself.
