How can families reframe tech use as a tool to enhance, not weaken, the home’s Islamic identity?

Parenting Perspective

Shift the Narrative of Technology

Children often have a black-and-white view of technology: it is either for fun, or it is restricted. Parents can introduce a third option by framing it as a tool to strengthen their Islamic identity. For instance, a phone can be used for a Quran app, a tablet for an Islamic story podcast, or a laptop for streaming a khutbah. By consistently showing that devices can support their deen, parents teach that technology itself is not the enemy; its effect depends entirely on how it is used.

Create a Culture of Purposeful Use

A family can create a culture where devices play an intentional role in their Islamic life. This could be a smart TV that plays Quran recitation in the morning or a shared family group for daily du’as. It is equally important to set clear boundaries around entertainment so that it does not overshadow these faith-based practices. This balance demonstrates that technology can strengthen the family’s identity when it is used with purpose and restraint.

Lead by a Consistent Example

Children will naturally mirror the behaviour they see. If they observe their parents scrolling casually more often than engaging in acts of faith, they will follow suit. However, when they see their parents using devices to listen to lectures or organise their prayers, they learn that technology can be aligned with iman. A consistent, lived example turns a device from a distraction into a reminder of one’s identity as a Muslim.

Spiritual Insight

Technology Should Lead to Guidance

The Quran is the ultimate source of guidance for a believer. Every tool we use, including modern technology, should ideally be used in a way that brings us closer to this guidance, rather than leading us into a state of heedlessness.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 2:

This is a Book (Quran) in which there cannot be any doubt; guidance for those who seek piety.

Using Tech to Seek Knowledge

The prophetic tradition places a high value on the pursuit of beneficial knowledge, describing it as a path to Paradise. When technology is used for this noble purpose, the act itself becomes a form of worship that strengthens a person’s faith.

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, 3643, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise.’

A Source of Barakah, Not Distraction

By shifting the narrative around technology, creating purposeful habits, and modelling mindful use, a family can transform its devices into a source of barakah. This teaches children that a home’s Islamic identity is not threatened by technology, but can actually be enriched by it when it is used with intention and discipline for the sake of Allah Almighty.
