What does it mean if a child starts copying phrases, humour, or behaviour that feels unusually vulgar or mature?

Parenting Perspective

When a child suddenly begins using language or telling jokes that seem out of character, particularly if the content is vulgar or overly mature, it often signals that they have been exposed to material beyond their developmental stage. This influence frequently comes from online videos, games, or social media influencers who normalise crude humour and adult themes.

A Sudden Shift in Vocabulary or Tone

If you notice your child starting to use slang, innuendo, or a style of joking that they clearly have not learned from home, it often suggests that they are copying online voices in an attempt to fit in or to imitate what they perceive as being ‘cool.’

Acting Older Than Their Age

Children may sometimes adopt certain mannerisms, a cynical sense of humour, or defiant attitudes that mimic those of online personalities who seem more ‘grown up.’ This can be an attempt to hide their own vulnerability or to seek social acceptance from older peer groups.

Discomfort Mixed With Repetition

Sometimes, a child might laugh nervously while repeating a vulgar joke, indicating that they do not fully understand the meaning but are aware that it gets a strong reaction from others. This often signals a mixture of confusion and a desire to impress their peers.

How Parents Can Respond

Instead of shaming your child, which can be counterproductive, it is better to respond with gentle curiosity. You could ask: ‘Where did you hear that phrase?’ Then, you can calmly explain why such words or behaviours are not suitable for them or for your family. Try to redirect their need for humour towards creativity, kindness, or other age-appropriate forms of fun. This approach turns the incident into a learning opportunity rather than just an act of disobedience.

By treating this as a chance to teach, parents can gently uncover and address the sources of harmful influence in their child’s digital life.

Spiritual Insight

Islam places a strong emphasis on maintaining purity in both our speech and our behaviour. Vulgarity, even when it is presented as humour, is strongly discouraged because the words we use have a direct impact on the state of our hearts and the shape of our character.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verses 70:

O those of you, who are believers, seek piety from Allah (Almighty) and always speak with words of blatant accuracy.

This verse is a direct command for believers to be conscious of Allah in their speech, choosing words that are upright, just, and dignified.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2009, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The believer is not one who taunts, curses, speaks obscenities, or is foul.’

This teaching makes it clear that using foul language or engaging in vulgar humour is in direct contradiction with the noble character of a true believer.

By connecting your guidance to these timeless reminders, you can show your children that real maturity is found not in copying crude online humour, but in carrying oneself with respect and dignity. Over time, they can learn that our words are powerful, and that when they are used with care, they become a beautiful reflection of our faith.
